General Norton A. Schwartz:
Commander of the U.S.
Transportation Command

General Norton A. Schwartz was the Commander of the U.S. Transportation Command of the U.S. Air Force, which is the manager for global air, land and sea transportation for the Department of Defense.

General Schwartz graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in political science and international affairs from the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colorado, in 1973.

He attended the Squadron Officer School, Maxwell AFB, Alabama and he received a Master’s degree in business administration, Central Michigan University, Mount Pleasant, Michigan.

General Schwartz attended Armed Forces Staff College, Norfolk, VA, in 1984 and the National War College, Fort Lesley J. McNair, Washington, D.C., in 1989. He served as a member of the Council of Foreign Relations and in 1994, he was a Fellow of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Seminar XXI.

General Schwartz’s military career covered a variety of responsibilities in the Air Force. He was the Commander of the Special Operations Command-Pacific, as well as Commander, Alaskan Command, Alaskan North American Aerospace Defense Command Region, and the 11th Air Force. He also was the Director of the Joint Staff, Washington, D.C.

General Schwartz was rated as a Command Pilot and he flew more than 4,200 hours on a variety of planes. He participated in the 1975 airlift evacuation of Saigon. In 1991, he served as Chief of Staff of the Joint Special Operations Task Force for Northern Iraq in Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm. In 1997, he led the Joint Task Force that prepared for the noncombatants’ evacuation of U.S. citizens in Cambodia.

He received many awards and decorations:

General Norton A. Schwartz was promoted to General on October 1, 2005.
